What is a 301 Redirect?
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirection from one URL to another that tells search engines: "this page has moved permanently to a new address — transfer all the authority and ranking signals to the new URL."
The "301" is the HTTP status code sent when the redirect is applied. When a browser or search engine crawler requests a URL that has a 301 redirect, it's automatically sent to the new URL, and the original URL's accumulated SEO value follows.
Why 301 Redirects Are Essential
Why 301 redirects are essential: Website migrations (when a website is rebuilt and URL structures change, 301 redirects preserve the organic search rankings of old URLs), URL cleanup (when outdated or poorly structured URLs need to be replaced with cleaner versions), Content consolidation (when two pages with similar content are merged into one, 301-ing the removed page to the surviving page consolidates their combined ranking signals), and Domain changes (when a site moves to a new domain, 301 redirects from the old domain to the new one transfer accumulated authority).
301 vs 302 redirects: A 301 (Permanent) transfers full SEO equity and should be used when the change is permanent. A 302 (Temporary) does not transfer SEO equity and should be used when the redirect will be removed.
In Webflow, 301 redirects are configured in Project Settings under the "Redirects" tab. At Appsrow, redirect management is a core part of every website migration project, ensuring no ranking authority is lost in the transition.
