What is a Meta Description?

A meta description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of a webpage's content — typically displayed as the short paragraph of text beneath the blue clickable headline in Google search results.

While Google has confirmed that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, they are critically important for click-through rate (CTR) — and CTR influences how much organic traffic your site actually receives from its ranking position.

Writing Effective Meta Descriptions

A well-written meta description: Compels users to click on your result over the competing results above and below it, clearly communicates what the page is about and what value it delivers, matches the user's search intent, includes the primary keyword naturally (Google bolds matching query terms in the description), stays within 150–160 characters to avoid being cut off in search results, and contains a soft call to action where appropriate.

When meta descriptions are absent or poorly written, Google will typically auto-generate a snippet from the page's content — and the auto-generated version is rarely optimal for CTR.

In Webflow, meta descriptions are set in the SEO Settings panel for each page. For CMS Collection Pages, meta descriptions can be dynamically generated from a CMS field — allowing you to scale unique descriptions across hundreds of pages as part of a programmatic SEO strategy.

At Appsrow, every page we launch has a manually crafted, intentional meta description — never left to auto-generation.
