Prototype

A prototype is an interactive, clickable simulation of a website or application that demonstrates how it will look and behave — created before the real product is built, for testing, validation, and stakeholder alignment.

What is a Prototype?

A prototype is an interactive, clickable simulation of a website or application that demonstrates how it will look and behave — created before the real product is built, for the purposes of testing, validation, and stakeholder alignment.

Unlike a wireframe (which shows structure), a prototype shows interaction. You can click buttons, navigate between pages, trigger hover states, and experience user flows — all within a simulated environment, not a live website.

Prototype Fidelity Levels

Prototypes exist on a spectrum of fidelity: Low-fidelity prototype (clickable wireframes — minimal visual design, shows basic navigation and structure), Mid-fidelity prototype (more detailed layouts with real content, some visual styling applied), and High-fidelity prototype (pixel-perfect visual design with realistic interactions, closely resembling the final product).

The primary value of prototyping includes: validating assumptions before building, catching usability issues early (when they're cheap to fix), aligning stakeholders by letting them experience the product rather than imagining it, and providing developer guidance during the build phase.

Tools for prototyping include Figma (the industry standard), Adobe XD, and Framer. At Appsrow, we prototype complex interactions and user flows in Figma before Webflow development begins.
