What is Visual Hierarchy?

Visual hierarchy is the arrangement and presentation of design elements in a way that guides the viewer's eye through the content in a deliberate order — from what's most important to what's least important.

Effective visual hierarchy ensures that the most critical information on a page is noticed first, secondary information is easy to find, and the overall layout feels clear and purposeful rather than overwhelming.

Tools That Establish Visual Hierarchy

The tools that establish visual hierarchy include: Size (larger elements attract more attention — headlines are large, body text is smaller, captions are smallest), Weight (bold text commands more attention than regular weight), Color (high-contrast colors draw the eye — a brightly colored CTA button stands out against a neutral background), Contrast (differences in lightness/darkness guide attention), Position (elements at the top of the page or in the center of the screen are seen first), Whitespace (elements with more space around them appear more prominent), and Proximity (items grouped close together are perceived as related).

Poor visual hierarchy leaves visitors unsure of where to look first, what to read, or what to do next — which increases bounce rate and decreases conversion.
