What is GEO?
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the emerging discipline of optimizing websites and content to appear as sources cited by generative AI systems — including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Bing Copilot — when they generate responses to user queries.
GEO represents the next evolution of SEO. As generative AI becomes a primary entry point for information (people asking AI chatbots instead of typing into Google), the question shifts from "how do I rank on Google?" to "how do I become a source that AI systems trust and cite?"
Key GEO Principles
Key GEO principles include: Source authority (AI systems are more likely to cite content from domains with high domain authority, clear authorship, and established credibility in their field), Factual/verifiable content (AI systems avoid citing speculative or opinion-heavy content), Structured/semantic content (well-organized content with clear headers, explicit definitions, and semantic HTML — which Webflow produces by default — is easier for AI systems to parse), Brand entity establishment, LLMs.txt (an emerging standard where websites publish a structured file listing key information about their content for AI systems to reference), and Freshness (AI systems prefer current, up-to-date content).
At Appsrow, GEO is a growing part of how we think about content architecture and technical implementation in Webflow — positioning our clients as the authoritative sources AI systems cite.
