What is LLMs.txt?

LLMs.txt is an emerging convention — proposed in 2024 — where websites place a structured plain-text or Markdown file at their root domain (yoursite.com/llms.txt) to help Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini better understand, navigate, and reference the site's content.

Analogous to robots.txt (which guides search engine crawlers) or sitemap.xml (which helps search engines discover pages), LLMs.txt is designed for the AI era — providing AI systems with a clear, structured overview of what a site contains and which content is most important.

What LLMs.txt Contains and Why It Matters

The LLMs.txt file typically contains: A brief description of who the site belongs to and what it does, links to key pages and content areas organized by topic, a short description of each linked resource, and metadata about the organization (products, services, areas of expertise).

Why LLMs.txt matters: When an AI system browses the web to answer a question, or when an AI training pipeline is indexing content, a well-structured LLMs.txt file acts as a helpful guide — reducing the likelihood that important content is missed. This is a key tool for GEO and AEO strategies.

Current status: LLMs.txt is not yet a universal standard but is gaining traction. At Appsrow, we implement LLMs.txt on our own site and offer it as part of our technical SEO service for clients who want to stay ahead of AI-era discoverability.
